Travel Seasons and Weather

Peak Season

Colombia has two peak seasons, two weeks of break (Holy Week & September break) along with many national holidays. Summer follows the North American summer calendar and is usually anywhere from one to a few months of break for students in Colombia during July/August. Winter break is the month of December and January. These are the peak seasons when lodging and even food prices will be at their highest price point.

  • Tip: We always recommend traveling between peak seasons, when able. This helps to reduce your environmental impact and can actually lead to a better experience from smaller tour groups.

Understanding Colombian Weather

In Colombia, due to its close proximity to the equator, there aren’t exactly 4 seasons. Typically you will see rainy seasons and dry seasons. Due to climate change, they can vary including longer than normal wet seasons and longer than normal dry seasons.

  • Tip: It is always advisable to pack clothing for both warm and cold weather.

Understanding Colombian Microclimates

Along with wet/dry seasons, the weather is divided into microclimates. High altitude is cold with low altitude being warm. In one day of travel your weather can vary according to location. Always plan for cold weather in the 40’s and 50’s while also being able to accommodate temperatures in the 90+ range. It all depends on where you are. Distances vary with some climates changing over short distances and altitude changes.

  • Tip: Always dress in layers when traveling cross country. This way you can add or take away clothing to ensure your continued comfort.

Weather and Packing Information

Rain is common in most parts of the Andean Mountain system in Colombia. Cities like Bogota and Manizales are cold and rainy, while Medellin and Cali tend to be hot and ranging from humid to dry.

  • Tip: It is essential to carry an umbrella, light coat and wool socks. The wool socks will keep your feet dry and comfortable in two extremes > Hot and wet, cold and wet, plus everything in between.
