Puracé (meaning fire mountain in Quechua) is not for the light hearted but well worth the effort for those with a good level of fitness and up for the challenge as you´ll be hiking up to 4,650m above sea level.
The start of this Paramo trek begins a couple of hours drive out of Popayan at 4,050 metres. Although it´s not a technical trek the weather can be unpredictable so be prepared for wet & windy weather. The hike up is approximately 2 hours to the 500m wide smoky crater. On a clear day you will be able to see the peaks of other volcanos off in the distance.
Purace is a birders paradise and among many other varieties one of the main attractions is the majestic condors that glide around the national park. If you are lucky you will be able to see them during feeding time by the park rangers.
