The most popular day trip from Medellin, Guatapé is located 2 hours from the city center. Very often known as one of Colombia’s most (if not the most!) colorful villages. It is a treat to the eyes to just walk around the village and admire the many colorful houses. One of the most distinctive and unique features is that each house is decorated with ¨zocalos¨ which refers to the lower part of the house. Each house is decorated differently, and they are said to be influenced by each homeowner’s interests, beliefs or even their family history.
One of the main attractions of Guatapé is the Peñon rock which at 220 metres high is rather impressive. Try the climb up the 740 steps to take in the breathtaking view of the Guatapé reservoir below. This Hydroelectric artificial dam was built in 1970 and really sets the scene. A boat trip around the lake is a nice way to take in the beautiful surroundings of this quaint tourist town.
