Minca, Colombia: 5 Best Reasons Why You Should Visit

The little mountain village of Minca in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains – the world’s highest coastal mountain range on the Caribbean coast of Colombia – has become increasingly popular with foreign travelers over the past few years. With a wonderful and well-deserved positive reputation, it is definitely somewhere you should consider visiting if you are planning a trip to the Colombian Caribbean.

So here are 5 best reasons why you should visit Minca, Colombia!

1. It’s easy to get there

This may not seem like the best reason to visit a place, but if you have just 2 weeks in Colombia then easy access is an important priority to make the most of your limited time. Minca sits at 600 meters above sea level just to the south of the city of Santa Marta. Although it is located in the foothills of the mountains, a newly-paved access road means that it is just a 45-minute drive from both downtown Santa Marta and the airport.

This also means that it’s really easy to take a day-trip to Minca if you have really limited time. An added bonus is that its location makes it easy to combine a visit with other top destinations in the region, such as The Lost City, Tayrona National Park, and the coastal deserts of the Guajira Peninsula.

2. It offers a truly diverse set of activities

The beauty of Minca is that there are so many diverse activities which you can enjoy when you visit. In just one day in Minca you could take a birdwatching tour with an expert guide, visit both a coffee and cacao farm, and hike to a mountain river for a cooling dip (sure, it’d be a busy day, but you could do it!).

There aren’t many places in the world, let alone just Colombia, where you can pack in such a unique and diverse range of activities into such a short amount of time, but Minca is undoubtedly one such place.

3. It’s a paradise for Nature lovers

As the second most biodiverse country in the world, Colombia is truly a paradise for nature lovers, and Minca is an ideal place to visit if you want to experience the wonders of Colombian nature firsthand. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains are a haven for biodiversity and endemic species, and Minca is a perfect gateway to discover these natural gems, particularly birds, for which the area is famous.

Whether you take a beginner’s birdwatching trip with a local guide around Minca or head further up into the Sierra to stay at El Dorado Bird Lodge (one of Colombia’s top birding destinations), Minca and the surrounding area is an ideal way to escape the hustle and bustle of the coast and get lost in nature.

4. It has an incredible climate

Although Minca is located less than an hour’s drive from the Caribbean coast, its mountain foothill location gives it a much milder climate than the beaches and National Parks around Santa Marta. It’s far from cold (although nights can sometimes be cool), but is far less suffocatingly hot than the lowland areas around the coast can be. With warm days and cool evenings, Minca is the ideal place to escape to for a few days of rest and relaxation on a trip to the Colombian Caribbean coast.

5. Coffee, chocolate and craft beer!

Minca’s aforementioned climate makes it an ideal place to grow coffee and cacao, as well as being one of the best places in Colombia to take farm tours to learn all about the production of these two important Colombian crops. La Victoria coffee farm is one of Colombia’s oldest coffee farms and has some impressive (and still functioning) machinery from the Victorian era (hence the name), while there are several different cacao farms which you can visit during a tour of Minca.

The fresh mountain spring water which Minca has in abundance is also being used to brew craft beer: the Nevada Cerveceria brews such mouth-watering beers as Happy Toucan and Happy Jaguar, and you can even visit their brewery alongside La Victoria Coffee Farm.
