Welcome to ‘The City of Eternal Spring’! On our Discover Medellin Tour you will have the chance to enjoy the best of Colombia’s most exciting city, as well as the natural highlights and lovely small towns surrounding it.
Our tour will begin with a Medellin city tour during which we will visit many of the city’s cultural and architectural highlights, including the Botero Park, where sculptures by Colombia’s most famous artist are on display, and the Lights Park, a unique series of light sculptures in a once no-go public space.
After the heartiest lunch in all of Colombia – a bandeja paisa, Medellin’s most iconic typical dish – we will head out on an afternoon tour of Comuna 13. This neighbourhood was once one of the most dangerous in the world, but has been turned around thanks to ambitious programmes of social urbanism architectural projects. We will meet with local community figures and learn about how the neighbourhood was brought back from the brink. There will also be the chance to discover some of Colombia’s best street-art and learn about the process from local artists.
After an early breakfast, we will drive east from Medellin over the Andes to the pretty little lakeside town of Guatape. On the way there will be a stop at the surreal giant rock of El Penol – with 740 steps to reach the top, it’s an intense little climb, but worth it for the spectacular 360-degree views over the lakes and islands of the Guatape reservoir. It’s one of Colombia’s most famous viewpoints, and with good reason: you probably won’t get a better view in all of Colombia!
In Guatape there will a delicious lunch of fresh trout, before we take a stroll through the colourful streets and plazas of one of Colombia’s prettiest towns. Our guide will explain all about the unique zocalos – the baseboards surrounding the buildings – which are painted with scenes from local day-to-day life in the region.
In the afternoon we will take a boat out onto the lake where we will enjoy a different perspective on the giant El Penol Rock and explore the hidden coves surrounding the reservoir. In the mid-afternoon we will head back to Medellin for well-deserved rest.
On our final morning we will ride the Medellin cable-car up over the mountains to Arvi Park, a lovely natural forest park to the east of the city. The views over the sprawling city from the cable-car are worth the ride alone, but Arvi Park is a real bonus! We will enjoy a guided forest hike along the pretty woodland trails, learning about the local ecosystems and spotting many species of Colombian orchids.
Once the hike is finished we will make a stop for some fresh, local coffee before riding the cable-car back down the mountainside into Medellin. Your Discover Medellin Tour ends here, but Colombia Eco Travel is happy to help you with your onward travel plans. Or you consider combining this Medellin tour with one of our other packages: the beauty of the Coffee Region is just a few hours away after all…
